We do the hard part of working with exosomes by speeding up and automating sample preparation, handling and processing giving you exactly what you want, solutions of pure sub-typed exosomes ready for whatever you need be it analysis or therapeutic applications.

We are developing a platform for the automated isolation of exosomes from any biofluid with high repeatability, and better purity, specificity, volume, and yield than almost every other technique currently available.

The Science

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) refer to various subtypes of cell-released, membranous structures. These vesicles go by many names, some of which include exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, and apoptotic bodies. In recent years, it has become clear that these extracellular vesicles play an important role in both physiological and pathological function. However, in research, specific issues arise when working with relatively pure preparations which make it challenging for scientists to characterize these vesicles properly. 

 

Clara Biotech is developing cutting-edge lab tools for the next-generation of exosomes and microvesicle isolation from a wide range of biological samples. We have well-established protocols and skills using our patented devices and immunomagnetic beads for providing high-efficiency isolation of exosomes and selecting their subtypes. The characterization services include surface marker identification, size distribution, and concentration measurement. Clara aims to develop the first microfluidic exosome sorting device (ExoSS) into the marketplace for automated, high-specific, and high throughput preparation of exosome subtypes from a wide variety of biofluids. 


 

*The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) proposed Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles (“MISEV”) guidelines for the field in 2014 and updated in 2018. Clara technology ensures compliance with the guidelines from MISEV 2018 to obtain the pure preparation of exosomes and their subtypes.

Mei He, Ph.D. 

Dr. He is an assistant professor at the University of Kansas. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Alberta and postdoctoral training from the University of California, Berkeley. This startup initiative has been awarded as the K-State “LAB”  business innovation in 2016 and Ingenuity Central Kansas Innovator. As a professor, inventor and entrepreneur, she continues to innovate around the core technology in Clara for advancing exosome-related research and discovery.
